A few months ago I mentioned how the photography world was going to quickly change. And now here we are. We have the largest 2 camera manufacturers releasing new mounts and new systems revolving around the mirrorless camera design. Bringing the count up to 3 companies (soon to be 4 #Panasonic) in the full frame mirrorless market.

Mirrorless is more than a fad. It’s more then a new wanna be cool system. Mirrorless is the base and foundation for future advancements in imaging only you can imagine. Already there are crazy amounts of focus points placed right on the sensor. We have smart focusing systems like eye AF and face tracking.

We have in body sensor stabilization, where the sensor moves to compensate for camera shake. We have 100% live view of your exact exposure in the viewfinder. We also have viewfinders so advanced that it’s hard to even tell you are looking at a small screen. The view finders can now display as much information as you would like all right in your eye piece.

With the mirrorless design, you also get much smaller and lightweight cameras. You may think weight doesn't matter... but it does. Wedding and outdoor photographers can attest to this I'm certain. We now have a shorter flange distances allowing for better light gathering and greater depth of field with smaller apertures as well as non existent chromatic aberration.

We now have sharper lenses, and wider apertures than before possible. Not only shaper over all but the new lenses will be sharpest wide open. Yes you read that right. Sharpest wide open. That’s due to larger lens mounts and shorter flange distances. We don’t have a mirror mechanism anymore so frame rates are going to get faster and faster. 12fps will soon be standard. The list could go on and on.

But the Specs and Specifics are Not Important.

I am proud to say I own one of the worlds first full frame mirrorless camera. At 5 years old the features and capability is primitive to today's amazing offerings, yet the image quality still ranks as one of the best around.

Annie and I got an early hands on with the Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera. It was the best feeling camera I have ever held in my hands.

I didn't switch to mirrorless years ago to join a fad. I didn't switch my entire Canon line up for a new system that I wasn't 100% sure would be the future. I invested in the mirrorless system so when time came for the standardization of this system I would be YEARS ahead.

The mirrorless movment is the most significant advancement since film was replaced with digital. And as the professionals who made that change years ago, I too want the best tool placed in my hands.

These mirroless systems are swiss army knives with more tools than any DSLR could dream of. The exciting part is that many more 'tools' are coming, tools and features you could only imagine. The technology being developed right now for the mirrorless systems will revolutionize the way we create images. It is going to revolutionize the way we all see images.

The Bright Future

I foresee a future where high ISO will no longer be a trade off but a inconsequential option. The exposure triangle will be shattered and we as photographers will no longer be limited. We will be able to choose our aperture and shutter speed at will with perfect results. I foresee a future where tripods will be a choice of consistency rather than a solution to camera shake. IBIS and stabilization will advance further than now.

The future is bright for photography, and as our tools change so will our art. We will be able to push our vision even further. We are creators and as such we love to push the limits. When things become easier to for the masses to achieve, we as artists look to innovate and push the boundaries of our chosen medium.

Do you think I would do Astrophotography if it was easy? Or if anyone could grab a camera from the Walmart shelf and achieve the same results as me? No. The day will come where that will be easy and by that time I will be advanced to an art that will be more technical and more gratifying than even I can imagine.

We are on the verge of the most technological advancements in photography's history, and its all due the simple removal of a mirror. This fundamental change is the base to photography's future. That’s what this whole thing is about. It’s not about specs, it’s not about who is right or wrong. It’s about the future of this medium I love so much.

Instead of fearing change, I will embrace it. Instead of mocking innovation , I will praise it. Instead of demeaning those who invest in it, I will support them. These cameras are not 'toys'. This system is your future. It's up to you to join, or be left behind.
